Samaraweera gets 20-year ban from Australian cricket roles

MELBOURNE: Former Sri Lankan Test cricketer Dulip Samaraweera has been issued a 20-year suspension from cricket activities in Australia for engaging in “inappropriate conduct” with a female player, as announced by Cricket Victoria (CV) on Thursday.

At 52, Samaraweera could not be reached for immediate comment by Reuters.

Samaraweera, who represented Sri Lanka in seven Test matches and five ODIs between 1993 and 1995, was involved in coaching women’s teams in Victoria, Australia, including the Melbourne Stars WBBL team.

Cricket Australia stated that its Conduct Commission had determined Samaraweera violated CA’s code of conduct, leading to his prohibition from any role within CA or state and territory associations in Australia. Cricket Victoria supported this decision.

Nick Cummins, CV’s head, expressed in a statement, We believe the conduct was entirely reprehensible and a betrayal of Cricket Victoria's values. The victim has shown remarkable strength and bravery in coming forward.

She will continue to receive our unwavering support to help her achieve her aspirations both on and off the field.
