Three Mayo Hospital nurses removed over injection deaths in Lahore

LAHORE: The Punjab Health Department has launched legal proceedings under the PEEDA Act against three Mayo Hospital nurses. They are accused of administering injections made from a compromised drug, which led to adverse reactions in 16 patients and resulted in two deaths.

In response to a serious incident in the chest surgical ward, the department has dismissed three nurses—Sonila Khalid, Saima Sehar, and Nazia Hassan—and instructed them to report to the Specialized Healthcare & Medical Education Department until further notice.

This decision follows an inquiry committee’s report formed after the event. One notification stated that a nurse was found negligent for improperly preparing and administering powdered injections (including errors in reconstitution, dilution, and the method of administration). These mistakes led to adverse drug reactions in 16 patients at Mayo Hospital in Lahore.

Since the claims were proven true, the department took legal action against the nurse under the law, and similar steps were taken for the other nurses under the PEEDA Act.

A health official expressed concerns about the current training methods for staff nurses in public hospitals across the province. He explained that while senior doctors prescribe medications, nurses are solely responsible for administering them. This lack of updated training on the new medication guidelines is putting patients at risk.

The official emphasized that as medication guidelines are frequently updated, health authorities must urgently retrain nursing staff. If these standards are not strictly followed, the safety of many patients could be compromised. Additionally, there are reports that some patients who received the improperly administered drugs remain in critical condition.
